The Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) hosted its No Guts No Glory No Story Western Cape Seminar in Velddrif on June 11.
The event brought together community journalists to discuss storytelling, podcasting, election reporting and the changing media landscape.
Delegates arrived at the Riviera Hotel in Velddrif on the evening of June 10, where a welcome function was held at Fök’sl Private Venue.
Attendees had an opportunity to network ahead of the seminar programme the following day.
The seminar commenced the following day at the Riviera Hotel with tea and coffee before the official welcome.
The programme featured a range of speakers who shared insights into the evolving role of journalists and the opportunities presented by new media platforms.
Andrew Daniel, host of The Rugby Factory podcast, led a session titled “Podcasting – enhance your story”.
During his presentation, he shared ideas on how journalists can strengthen and expand their storytelling through podcasting.
The focus then shifted to politics and local government. Jason Felix, specialist political reporter at Netwerk24, addressed attendees on “The journalist’s role in the local government election”.
His presentation explored the responsibilities and challenges facing journalists covering local government elections.
The afternoon programme featured Ivor Price, co-founder and Managing Director of Food For Mzansi Group.
In his presentation, “Meeting audiences where they are: The new media reality”, Price explored how podcasts, events, newsletters, WhatsApp channels and live community activations have become key areas of innovation for media organisations.
He highlighted these platforms as part of the changing media environment, where engaging audiences extends beyond traditional articles alone.
The seminar concluded with a word of thanks and a message wishing all attendees a safe journey home.
