The Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) has announced Stellenbosch University as its newest sponsor, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s continued efforts to strengthen and support community journalism in South Africa.

The FCJ is a non-profit company representing community journalists across the country.

Through training, mentorship, networking opportunities and advocacy for ethical journalism and press freedom, the organisation aims to strengthen the community media sector and ensure local journalism continues to thrive.

FCJ Executive Director Ben Burger said the organisation is excited to welcome Stellenbosch University to the FCJ family.

“We are proud to welcome Stellenbosch University to the FCJ family. Their support reflects a shared commitment to developing ethical, independent and sustainable community journalism in South Africa,” said Burger.

He also expressed his gratitude to the organisations that have supported the FCJ over the years.

“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our headline sponsor, AVBOB, as well as our valued legacy sponsors, Novus Media Community News and Caxton Local Media, who have been part of the FCJ’s journey for many years. Their investment in the Forum and community journalism has played an important role in helping us grow and fulfil our mission,” said Burger.

The FCJ’s annual National Seminar will take place on 21 August in Pretoria, bringing together community journalists from across South Africa for a day of professional development, discussions and networking.

The seminar will be followed by the AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards gala dinner, where outstanding work in community journalism will be recognised.

The FCJ encourages newsrooms to attend as a team and take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen their election reporting ahead of the municipal polls.
