The Digital News Transformation Fund (DNTF) has announced it will open its second funding call in February 2026, offering a renewed opportunity for South Africa’s small and independent news publishers to access support for their digital transformation and sustainability efforts.

The funding call introduces a streamlined two-phase application process designed to make the opportunity more accessible to smaller newsrooms while maintaining independent oversight of funding decisions.

Phase 1 will open on 16 February and close on 1 March 2026. This initial phase requires no supporting documentation, lowering the barrier to entry for under-resourced publishers.

An independent Adjudication Committee will review Phase 1 applications during the week of 9 March. Successful applicants will then be invited to submit full proposals in Phase 2, which runs from 16 March to 5 April.

Following full adjudication in April, the DNTF Board will ratify funding decisions before contracting begins.

“Independent news publishers are essential to a healthy democracy. This funding call is structured to make the process more accessible while preserving independent, rigorous decision-making, ensuring support reaches publishers who are committed to sustainability, innovation and public-interest journalism,” said Marietta Lombard, DNTF Board member.

The DNTF recently launched Ignite, a grant programme specifically designed for early-stage publishers navigating digital transformation. The programme provides R100,000 grants to address urgent sustainability and digital challenges.

Ignite grants can be used to establish essential digital functions including domain registration, basic content management systems, analytics setup, digital content creator and journalist stipends, and foundational training. Up to seven Ignite grants will be awarded in each funding window, with streamlined timelines and simplified reporting requirements.

The funding call is open to both new and returning applicants. To qualify, applicants must be legally registered entities, demonstrate tax compliance, and hold Press Council membership at the time of application.

The DNTF is a partnership between Google and the Association of Independent Publishers, administered by Tshikululu Social Investments. The Fund provides project-based grants and capacity building to strengthen digital operations, audience development, and financial resilience among South Africa’s independent news publishers.
